Kirkland Arts Center is proud to present Telling Stories, featuring the ceramic works of long time student and artist, Barbara Hennig.

“Storytelling is as ancient in origin as working with clay. Stories make up our dreams, memories and fantasies. The are the ubiquitous component of the human condition and an ever-present part of my art.

I can’t remember the first time I picked up a piece of clay, but know that I’ve been playing with it since I was a kid messing with my mom’s clay sculptures. Although I’ve worked in many mediums, I always return to clay and the slow process of hand-building my ceramics. My narrative forms as I methodically add and subtract the clay while sculpting it. My art is influenced by many sources… from social issues to the personal stories of my life, but my inspiration, as the clay itself, derives from nature. My work is primarily decorative; movement, organic shapes, color and texture prevail. I seek to discover the ever-changing spirit of things, fleeting moments of time in a real or imagined world. My ceramics are made to delight the eye and hopefully invoke a story.”

This exhibition is located in the Project Space on the mezzanine level of our gallery.
